USMU (previously - Sverdlovsk Medical Institute) was founded in 1931, limiting the choice of educational directions therapeutic and prophylactic faculty. Rank Academy received in 1995, replacing it on the current in 2013. Presently, the university offers training in six main directions.

Admission to the Ural State Medical University on the basic educational programs of HPE in recent years is about 400 people on a budgetary basis, and about 400 people on the concluded contracts (agreements).

According to published data USMU (version RIA) is one of the top 100 best universities in the country (in 2013 USMU took 77th place).
