ITMO - a leading Russian university in 2009, has the status of national research university.

University "grown" from a vocational school, where in 1900, for the first time in the Russian Empire, organized training of masters in the field of precision mechanics and optics. Later on its base opened College, letting out-of Instrument Engineers. In the 30s of the 20th century there was already the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics. The universitywas named ITMO in 2003.

Today, not only the educational direction is actively developing, but also - the sphere of scientific activity.Today ITMO employs both Russian specialists and scientists from leading universities of the world - they come on the ITMO Fellowship & Visiting Professorship program.
