The University is a leading university of the Perm region and one of the best medical universities in the country. Founded in 1916 - Then it was a department at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty. Soon the medical department became a faculty, then - as an independent institution. Today PSMU - a major educational, scientific and research center.

The University has 569 highly qualified teachers, including 143 doctors and 354 candidate of medical sciences. Among them are winners of the State Prize, Honored Scientist of Russia, Honored employees of the higher school of the Russian Federation, Honored doctors, winners of the regional awards of outstanding scientists of the Perm Region Professor P. A. Yasnitskogo, holders of diplomas Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation,Scholarship holders of state scientific scholarships for outstanding scientists and talented young scientists of Russia, scholars of the Perm region. 87.7% of full-time faculty members have a degree. This is the highest among the universities of the Perm region and one of the highest among the medical universities of the country.

Scientists PSMU successfully develop scientific problems relevant both for Perm health care and for public health of the Russian Federation: cardiology, pediatrics, surgery, neurology, dentistry, epidemiology and other direction.

Every year, the University  leads in the number of patents for inventions and utility models among universities in the region.

The university is given the main role in the implementation of national projects in the health care and education of the Perm region.

The University has a center of practical skills and abilities, electronic reading room, modern computer classes. Actively introducing Internet technology, electronic information systems and deploy interactive multimedia solutions. Operate preparatory courses for students and foreign students and distance learning center.

Annually more than 3,400 students are trained at the university. 365 clinical interns are studying - 22 specialties, 264 clinical residents - 40 specialties, 94 post-graduate students - 20 specialties. Over a year more than 2,000 doctors increase their professional qualification - more than 80 specialties. The University annually produces over 500 highly qualified doctors of various profiles and 50 specialists of the ACT.

The University has 4 dissertation councils with the right to award a scientific degree of a candidate and a doctor of medical sciences.

Since 1992, the university has a program of international student exchanges in the framework of IFMSA.. During this time, over 100 specialists have been trained, who successfully work in foreign medical institutions of the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The university conducts training of foreign citizens on the programs of pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate education. At present, foreign citizens from 21 countries of the near and far abroad study at the university.
