MEPhI history began with the founding in 1942 of the Moscow Mechanical Institute of ammunition. Subsequently, at its base formed a leading Russian Nuclear University MEPI, in the development and formation of which was attended by prominent Soviet scientists, including the head of the USSR atomic project Academician Igor Kurchatov.
