Irkutsk State Technical University ranks first among regional universities in Russia according to the independent rating "Business Russia" in 2008. According to a survey of 300 largest Russian companies ISTU took eleventh place among all universities in the country and first among universities in Siberia and the Far East. According to the data for 2006 in the university studying 33560 students, including 24557 students on a commercial basis, 11003 - on a budget. In June 2010 the University joined the "Association of the leading universities" in Russia.
ISTU conducts training in 10 profiles, 34 areas and 86 specialties in all forms of basic training consists of 4 institutes, 18 faculties, a branch in the city Usolye-Siberian, and 21 representative offices in the territory of the Irkutsk region and beyond. In 2005, the university opened a representative office in Mongolia. In 2000 ISTU technopark, which today includes training, research and production centers, Service departments of the university, IT infrastructure, regional innovation structure, a business incubator and 16 enterprises of high-tech businesses.
In 2010 ISTU won the second competition of university development programs, in respect of which the category "national research university".
