Irkutsk State Medical University is the firstborn of higher medical education in the East of Russia and one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Siberia.

In ISMU employs more than 100 professors and doctors of sciences, 298 candidates of science, 1 Academician and 2 Corresponding Member of Academy of Medical Sciences and 90 members of social academies, 4 Honored Scientist of Russia, 34 Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, 2 Honored health professional, 1 honored employee of higher school of the Russian Federation, 2 honored inventor of the Russian Federation, 1 honorable employee of Russian higher school, 10 honored personalities of science of  the Republic of Buryatia , 7 honored doctor of the Republic of Buryatia, 1 honorable citizen of the Irkutsk region, 2 honorable citizen of the city of Irkutsk, 10 are laureates of state, national and governor's prizes ..

Almost 50 years Irkutsk Medical University trains specialists for foreign countries. Among the Russian medical universities such recognition awarded to only 7 institutions of higher education. During this time, significantly more than 500 doctors were trained for 25 countries in the Near and Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. Training of foreign students at the University is carried out in five specialties: general medicine, pediatrics, dentistry, preventive health, pharmacy; after passing an opportunity to postgraduate training in their chosen specialty. Diploma of Irkutsk Medical University gives the right to medical activities in 35 countries.
